HERMES 90cm SILK SCARF - FAUNE ET FLORE DU TEXAS
by KERMIT OLIVER
Texas Wildlife is unique in that the English translation of the title also appears on the scarf, first produced in 1986. While this is not Kermit Oliver's first design for Hermes (that honor belongs to Pani la Shar Pawnee, issued in 1984), it is arguably the design most associated with the artist who hails from the state. The design was re-issued in 2005 in a Special Edition supporting the Houston Museum of Fine Arts, and again in 2014 in the 70cm format. There is also a 140cm cashmere shawl; the shawl was astoundingly available at one of the Hermes national sales in France about 20 years ago (I've seen the white and the blue colorways) as his designs are less sought-after overseas.
I resisted this scarf for a long time, thinking I'd only wear it in November. Silly me! A LOT of colorways were produced in the original issue, and I think nearly all have cycled through my scarf drawer over the years. When I finally learned how to knot scarves beyond a simple bias fold or a sailor's knot, I had a new-found appreciation for this design.
