HERMES 45cm SILK POCKET SQUARE
and 100cm CASHMERE - QUATRE CHEVAUX
by DAVID BARTHOLOMEO

Alice Shirley lured me to the men's section of the boutique with Awooooo! (and Grrrrr! and Arrrrrgh!) and it's become as much of a playground for me as the women's section. I read an interview with Nigel Peake, artistic director for men's clothing, where he said that one of his criteria for approving a scarf design is whether it would be at home in the women's section. If yes, then the design is not produced.

So I regularly peruse men's scarves and when this appeared in 2021 I was instantly smitten. The little pink gav was ordered immediately. I pined for a couple of colorways from the original 100cm cashmere version, and was delighted when a dear friend decided to re-home hers!

And while the colors (and busy-ness!) drew me to it, its 'story behind' made me love it even more. Because it is NOT the four horsemen of the apocalypse! From Hermes:

The four horseshoes symbolize luck and the four elements: air, water, earth and fire. The designer wanted to represent the delicate balance that unites them with all living beings. Land animals, as well as creatures from the sea and sky swirl around, as if transported by a gentle breeze. In the center, two legendary figures preside over this abundant procession: a phoenix rises from its ashes, not far from a majestic dragon. The infinitely large come together with the infinitely small, just like in our world.

I. Love. This. Scarf. Much happier than the apocalypse.
