HERMES 90cm SILK SCARF - INTO THE CANADIAN WILD
by ALICE SHIRLEY
Once again, I didn't 'get' this Alice Shirley design when it came out in 2017. I was accustomed to traditional Hermes scarf layouts: wide borders surrounding a circle or a square containing horses or flowers or feathers. This was busy, and cartoony. Of course now busy-and-cartoony is my jam.
Alice Shirley created this piece to commemorate Canada's 150th birthday.
From the Hermes Story Behind:
Canada is the second biggest country in the world by geographical area. Bounded by three oceans, this vast territory is watered by thousands of lakes. Its diverse fauna is protected in a host of national and regional parks, burgeoning with wildlife. This vivid evocation by Alice Shirley presents a swirling celebration of life, an explosion of colour. A majestic snowy owl – one of the symbols of the Quebec region – soars amid the aurora borealis. Animals go about their daily lives by land and sea: polar and brown bears, salmon, narwhals, orcas and whales, stags, bison, bighorn sheep, caribou, snow geese, Canada geese, butterflies and owls are depicted in their habitats, among rushes, at the foot of a great sequoia, in the shade of a maple tree, surrounded by blue flax flowers, in the clear waters of a river… This carré is an ode to the natural world, a celebration of its inestimable value, and a testimony to the treasures of the Canadian wild.
I grew up a few hours' drive and a ferry ride from Canada, with Vancouver and Victoria being favorite family road trips. I've also been to Banff, Calgary, Toronto, Niagara Falls and Windsor. Perhaps the most soul-grabbing town was Churchill, on the shores of Hudson Bay, with wild polar bears in Wapusk Natural Habitat. Words cannot describe how badly I'd like to go back in time, grab myself by the shoulders, shake vigorously and scream "BUY EVERY COLORWAY!" Could I lose my mind and set about to add every colorway to my collection? Perhaps. So far I've added three colorways to Ye Olde Scarf Drawer, from left to right:
Colorway 03 Bleu Vert Parme
Colorway 10 Vert Rouge Brun
Colorway 07 Vert Corail Bordeaux
