HERMES 140cm SILK MOUSSELINE SCARF - URASHIMA TARO
by NATSUNO HIDAKA
I've said it before and I'll say it again, I am not a huge fan of mousseline scarves of any shape or size because I find them difficult to knot well, the larger formats have soooooo much fabric, and as lightweight as they are they are quite warm. But every now and then I find one that is special enough to keep. And so here we are.
Natsuno Hidaka created this delicate design in 2015, bringing to life the Japanese fairy tale of Urashima Taro. A fisherman saves a sea turtle who is being bothered by small children. To thank the fisherman, this turtle carries him on its back to the Dragon Palace where he plays with a princess for several days. Eventually the fisherman misses his mother. He returns to the back of the sea turtle to go home, but not before the princess gifts him with a box that will protect him from harm AS LONG AS HE DOESN'T OPEN THE BOX! Once home, the fisherman finds he has been gone for 300 years, his mother and friends long gone. Of course then he opens the box, in which the princess had sealed away his old age, and he becomes old and decrepit.
The turtle is in the lower right corner, the fisherman's home shores in the upper left. Florals and clouds, birds soaring among swirling winds fill the square. And this ties like a dream, even though yellows and browns usually don't suit me. TBH the colors are a bit duplicative of my Colliers et Chiens wash, but I can't let go of that one either.
