HERMES 140cm CASHMERE SHAWL - TOUS LES BATEAUX DU MONDE
by ALINE HONORE
I was late to the Aline Honore game! Yes, one of my oldest and most beloved shawls is hers (La Vie du Gran Nord) but I didn't really 'get' her work until I expanded my knotting universe. My eyes have opened!
I'm not one for maritime themes, so I resisted this boat-y design until I realized how exquisite the border is, and the contrast hem is spectacular. I usually knot it so the border and hem take center stage, not just because they are heavenly but also because the center is dark and I feel like Elvira - link inserted for the youth. (And just like Mon Premier Galop will always be My Little Pony in my head, this may become Boaty McBoatface because the real title is kind of long-ish.)
This was also issued in a 90cm carre, but I haven't seen a colorway that has made me actively hunt for one.
Sadly, I found this shawl more than 10 years after its release and I can't find the Story Behind to save my life. I've read that this design was a collaboration between Hermes and the National Museum of the Navy: in 2010, the museum presented an exhibition of ship models made at the request of a discoverer by the name of Admiral Paris who traveled the seas and eventually became curator of the museum. Some of the places he visited were the Tagus, Calcutta, and Chile. If you can toss me a rope on the official Story Behind, ping me!
