HERMES 90cm DOUBLE FACE SILK SCARF - LE TIGRE ROYAL
by CHRISTIANNE VAUZELLES
I have such a soft spot for this regal feline. It has so many fun iterations - the 70cm and the floral bandana (which friends have dubbed Carmen Miranda), the traditional and the tasseled polka dot pointu (had it at one point but the tassels got in the way of good knots so I bid it adieu), the GM cashmere and the dip dye silk shawl, not to mention the enamel jewelry and housewares.
But the tiger that has withstood the test of time for me is a Garden Party 36! I was in DC on business, met up with a silken sister and hit up Neiman Marcus (that's how long ago this was; how I miss the days when Neiman carried Hermes scarves and bags!). Spied the bag, and played one of my favorite games: Name That Pricetag. We vastly overestimated the price which made the real cost seem like a bargain, so there you go. (Note: if you're new to the GP, it's basically a cavern and you really need an organizer insert to make the bag utile.)
I digress.
The first double face scarf was issued in 2020 (I think with Della Cavalleria Favolosa, C'est La Fete, Pani, and Wow!/Factory). Nothing about the first couple of batches of double sides did anything for me, but the buzz about the 2022 Tigre Royal was irresistible - both sides of the green colorway seemed like they'd work with my closet: not too dark, not too light. It's only one of two double face designs in Ye Olde Scarf Drawer and for whatever reason I haven't reached for it a lot. Perhaps because YOSD is overflowing?
From Hermes' The Story Behind:
In 1977, Christiane Vauzelles chose to showcase this majestic feline surrounded by two golden palms. The noble creature takes center stage of this double-sided carre in a new color on one side, and meticulously redesigned with a ballpoint pen and zoomed-in effect on the other. Agile and solitary, the Bengal tiger thrives in the Indian or Burmese savannahs, and can climb up to the highest forests of Nepal. Beware, its serene grace can be deceiving!
