HERMES SILK TWILLY- SPACE DERBY
by UGO BIENVENU
Once again, I find myself attracted to a scarf that is so un-traditionally/un-classic Hermes. Ugo Bienvenu takes the brand's equestrian heritage and puts it into space. It feels like the chariot race of Ben-Hur (which was the inspiration for the pod race in the Star Wars Phantom Menace prequel; all the prequels were garbage IMO but I digress). I adore the original 90cm carre (fabulous striped hem) - tried the marine colorway thinking marine and me are good friends but it turned out to be way too dark; by the time I came to this sad conclusion it was gone from boutiques and I'm way too gun-shy to try the other colorways unless they magically appear IRL for me to try.
So when the twilly came out I had to get one, even though I struggle with what to do with twillies. Bienvenu's robo-horses also appeared a year later on one side of the Mustangs double-face, with Robert Dallet's classic Western horses racing on the other side; this was a temptation but there can be just one robo-horse design in YOSD.
From the Hermes Story Behind:
Here we are launched into space for a breathtaking derby among the stars! Mysterious planets and constellations light up a track on which six jockeys race at top speed. The artist Ugo Bienvenu drew inspiration from mid-twentieth-century American comics and their superheroes for these cosmic teams of horses steered by daring drivers. Every detail contributes to the futuristic and colorful atmosphere of this thrilling race, from the curves of the chariots to the combinations of the horses.
