HERMES 90cm SILK SCARF - ROUE ARRIERE DU CAROSSE IMPERIAL DE LA COUR DE VIENNE

Oh for heaven’s sake if this isn’t the longest scarf title in existence I don’t know what is (ok, Shackelton and L’Instruction du Roy come kind of close if you use the extended titles but for realz this scarf title is nuts). Normally I shy away from scarves that are excessively floral or that have certain shades of yellow, but I had to make an exception for this because my grandparents hail from Vienna. I’ve been twice – saw where my grandmother grew up on Porzellangasse, went to the Spanish Riding School including a behind the scenes tour, went to the top of Stephensplatz, ate lots of schnitzel and strudel (nothing compares to Grandma’s strudel!), ate torte at both Hotel Sacher and Demel, went to the opera wearing a scarf as a skirt because they wouldn’t let me in wearing shorts…
Anyhow, I wanted a scarf with a Viennese theme but despite my love of the Lipizzaners I don’t love Real Escuela Andaluza (actually the full title of this one is also fairly long). I stumbled upon this design a few years ago and purchased the black colorway. I loved the colors of the flowers (and the flowers aren’t overpowering in the design) but more importantly I loved the gold ink in the fleurs de lis that are almost like a jacquard. Alas I struggle with black scarves – I’ve got a high contrast between my dark hair and fair skin and need more color by my face; black just weighs me down. Since then I’ve seen other colorways: a blue with a red border, a burgundy that I had for a bit but let go because I wasn’t wearing it, and a green. Imagine my delight when I discovered this soft pink colorway! There’s something about it that softens the golden yellow, and I actually wear it a lot. It was issued in 1983 – I was still in high school then – and despite being 40+ years old it’s still got a lot of life left in it!
