HERMES COTTON PAREO by ANNIE FAIVRE
I began collecting Hermes scarves in the early-2000s. It started with a gavroche gifted to me on my birthday and quickly expanded to resale shops and resale sites, before setting foot in a boutique. In an early foray into one of my favorite consignment shops, I saw this cotton shawl marked as Hermes. Skeptical of the machine stitched hems I called my SA who confirmed that, yes, pareos have machine stitched hems. So I added it to YOSD.
Except I didn't really add it to YOSD; I added it to my swimwear drawer because aren't pareos coverups??? But I don't go to the beach much (boring) and I don't have a pool or friends with pools (and pools are, well, boring), and when I did I was worried about getting this wet so I didn't really use it that much.
Just when I was about ready to toss this in the re-home pile, I discovered these could be worn as - gasp! - a scarf! Worlds opened up!
While I can't find a title or artist signature (or even a copyright - these hallmarks are often absent from pareos) I am pretty sure this was designed by Annie Faivre based on the the detailed design and the presence of her monkey. I've not seen this anywhere in the 20+ years since I found it, until I saw a different colorway on a resale site in 2024. There are no details provided about the design in the description so the owner is just as flummoxed as I am. It's priced at more than double what I paid (it's been 20+ years, after all) so if it drops in price I may just have a duplicate...
