HERMES 90cm SILK SCARF - NEW ORLEANS
by LOIC DUBIGEON
When I started collecting in the early-aughts, I was thrilled to discover New Orleans Creole Jazz: my mother grew up in NOLA and we visited my grandparent there every year, including so many Mardi Gras parades, visits to Audubon Park and the zoo, jazz brunches at Commander's Palace, streetcar rides, beignets... I *love* New Orleans, and while my grandparents have both passed I still enjoy visiting the old antebellum house, wandering the French Quarter and the French Market, and eating amazing gumbo, po' boys and shaved ice.
Oops, got my mouth watering. Really, I could rhapsodize about the city forever. So when I discovered this 1996 ode to NOLA I had to get it...in every colorway. It was more than 5 years old by then so I was able to accomplish this without breaking the bank.
In August 2005, Hurricane Katrina hit. The Crescent City is actually below sea level, and the sea was held at bay by a levee system. The levees failed, flooding most of the sprawling city. The devastation was unimaginable. The following year, Hermes re-issued this scarf in 3 colorways: orange, black and blue/rose. Sales of this limited edition helped fund the restoration of City Park's historical carousel.
But as with so many designs that make me happy, real estate in YOSD got cramped and over time I re-homed fifteen colorways, leaving only one re-issue (which famously corrected the misspelling of Lil Hardin's name: the original issue mis-spelled it Harding).
From the Hermes Story Behind in 1996:
New Orleans, the cradle of jazz. At the turn of the century the strolling fanfare of brass and wind instruments settled in the bars, joined by piano, the double bass and the drums, for a jam session to wake the dead. It was the age of the blues, and their spirit still haunts the famous riverboats, who ply the Mississippi, and whose paddles churn to the legendary names of Louis Armstrong, King Oliver, Johnny Dodds and many others.
