HERMES 140cm CASHMERE SHAWL - MON PREMIER GALOP
by TONG REN
Sometimes when I'm in a boutique I see something on display and am immediately and inexplicably drawn to it. Such is the case with the 2022 design by Tong Ren, Mon Premier Galop. I think what drew me to it was the blue background because once upon a time I had a similarly blue shawl of Tout en Carre, and it was at a time when I had no clue how to deal with all the fabric so after a few wearings I re-homed it. So yet another instance where I've been kicking myself black and blue with regret and scouring the secondary market to see if it pops up to no avail.
But anyhow. I saw this, and in typical me fashion remembered the name *kind of* and squealed "My Little Pony!"
To my delight this ties like a dream. Colorwise it reminds me of my Eleftheria giant silk with the blue and terracotta, but while I'm charmed by all the detail in that scarf it's the simplicity of this design that makes me smile. A friend interpreted the design as a child's first pony, but the story outlines foal's first romp accompanied by a sweet butterfly.
From the Hermes Story Behind:
He moves across the sand, one leg after the other, accompanied by a playful butterfly and illuminated by a mischievous sun peeking out from behind a cloud. With his slightly hesitant yet intensely happy gait, this horse evokes the fragility and boldness of first steps… a magical moment, a moment of grace. The illustrator, Tong Ren, is an artist of Chinese origin whose designs delicately combine simple lines with sophisticated motifs of meticulously detailed passementerie. Mon premier galop also reveals his fondness for traditional crafts, particularly his love of wicker baskets and woven straw hats.
