HERMES 100cm CASHMERE SCARF - MADISON PARTY
by TIBOR KARPATI
If you've spent any time perusing my collection, you know I love a scarf with a good sense of humor. I absolutely adore Faubourg Party (I mean, how can you not love a party attended by llamas, dinosaurs, elephants, giraffes, bears with suitcases...) but as usual the mens colors were fairly limited and not that interesting. I came thisclose to getting a yellow-hemmed blue colorway but my boutique didn't have it in stock and it wasn't compelling enough to order. But I did keep looking for it on the secondary market. To no avail.
I sat straight up at full attention when it was adapted for the grand opening of the new Madison Avenue NYC flagship store. The burgundy, light and dark blue, and yellow hem was sooooo up my alley! It was a special limited edition available only to guests at the over-the-top opening party, and any leftover inventory was available to purchase only in-store at Madison Avenue - no transfers. Gnashed my teeth over that one! Not only were the colors fantastic, but there were some unique additions to the guest list including a dinosaur skeleton (likely from the Museum of Natural History, coming alive at night to attend the party a la Night at the Museum), the Space Shuttle and NYC yellow cabs.
Sure enough it appeared quickly on the resale market at insane mark-ups. Then fortune smiled upon me and it appeared on a resale site below retail. It was meant to be!
From the Hermes Story Behind:
The Hungarian cartoonist Tibor Karpati depicts the historic address of Hermès as a world of pixels inspired by 1980s video games, creating a night of madness that will undoubtedly last until dawn. Under a starry sky, the 24 Faubourg store is transformed into a nightclub! To the rhythm of an electronic melody, there is dancing from the first floor to the terrace. The celebration is bizarre and fantastical: a dinosaur has crept in among the guests and an elephant takes center stage in the ballroom. In one of the windows of the top floor, a woman scatters a bunch of clothes: could it be the Hermès artistic director of the men's universe, presenting the dancers with pieces from a future collection?
