HERMES 65cm COTTON / SILK SCARF - EX-LIBRIS EN MOSAIQUE
by HUGO GRYGKAR
Ever since Alice Shirley lured me with Awooooo! in 2018, I've put mens scarves on the same level of consideration as womens scarves. My biggest complaint about mens scarves is they don't often come in fun colors. It's as if the mens director thinks the only masculine colors are blue, grey, orange and black. A lot of designs may call my name but the colors are either awful for me (hello, orange!) or redundant to what's already in Ye Olde Scarf Drawer.
One day last year as I was meandering through the mens section of the boutique and from across the room I spied a hot pink hem! I had to take a closer look. At 65cm, it's bigger than a gav, smaller than a 70; the size got me excited because for much of the year I live in an inferno (less fabric and all). Even better, it's a blend of 51% cotton/49% silk - the cotton makes it more breathable than all-silk, and the silk lends a welcome softness to the cotton (OMG Danse is so stiff and scratchy!).
So yeah, I loved the size, I loved the fabric, and I loved the pink hem and pops of yellow that keep this blue scarf from being boring. And while I shy away from classics like Ex-Libris, the tweak to the design with the mosaic treatment made it more than acceptable.
From the Hermes Story Behind:
This could be a scarf found at the bottom of a trunk or the beautiful remains of an ancient mosaic buried in the dust, evoking the former opulence of an imaginary palace. The center reveals a 19th century design by Alfred de Dreux, which was beloved by Emile Maurice Hermes, while carriages from the same period can be seen all around. You could then imagine a historian amplifying their research in order to identify and list each element, piece by piece, until the final revelation... it is indeed the work of Hugo Grygkar!
