HERMES 100cm CASHMERE SCARF - AWOOOOO!
by ALICE SHIRLEY
Back in 2018 I took a bucket list trip to Churchill, Manitoba to trundle across the tundra of Wapusk National Park, to watch wild polar bears headed toward Hudson Bay as it froze over, allowing them to hunt for seals. About a week before I left, I was flipping through some magazine and saw a picture of this scarf, and my nerve endings all started tingling. I dashed to my boutique and found the one colorway I'd seen in the magazine! While the design features a wolf instead of a polar bear, there was something about it that made it feel perfect for the trip - perhaps because the stars look like falling snow and it just feels like the wolf is in a boreal forest.
Even though this wasn't my first Alice Shirley scarf (that honor belongs to Tyger, Tyger), it was my first introduction to men's scarves. It took me a couple of years to realize this was part of a 3-design series of men's cashmere scarves, all with the faces of animals hollering one-word vocals (this wolf, and Aaaaargh! (T. Rex) and Grrrrr! (bear)). Delightfully, a fourth entry came out in 2024: Roaaaaar! (lion). But if someone were to put a gun to my head and told me I could choose just one of the series to keep, it would be the first Awooooo! in the bordeaux colorway with the pink hem.
