HERMES 100cm CASHMERE SCARF - AAAAARGH!
by ALICE SHIRLEY
The first Alice Shirley men's scarf I discovered was Awooooo! - I'd seen a photo of the prune colorway in a magazine and absolutely had to have it. It's possible the SA asked if I was interested in Grrrrr! - memory does not serve me well here - but if that happened how awful that I'd said no. And it was still a year before Aaaaargh! appeared in boutiques. By the time I learned there was a FREAKING DINOSAUR SCARF the T rex was three years out of season. Gah.
But the Scarf Gods broke into a wide grin. I found the prune on the resale market (all the way from England!), and during the pandemic, when boutiques were closed and/or limiting the number of guests allowed in, the fine folks running the online boutique must have spent their downtime cleaning the warehouse and discovered a stash of older scarves (Animapolis was another lucky cleaning-the-warehouse posting). At least that's the story I tell myself; I'm not certain how these older designs came about to be posted. Perhaps since the semiannual sales weren't happening, they collected all the merch designated for the sale and posted them online. Who knows. Either way I wound up with all but the orange/green colorway (04). Sadly, my one-neck life means I've gnashed my teeth and am keeping just two.
Hermes doesn't seem to do a Story Behind for men's scarves; this is the snippet they posted on the online shop:
The T-Rex has fascinated humanity ever since its first fossils were discovered. It has dominated pop culture, been featured in books, museums, movies, cartoons... And now on an Hermes scarf
