HERMES 100cm CASHMERE SCARF - AAAAARGH!
by ALICE SHIRLEY
The first Alice Shirley men's scarf I discovered was Awooooo! - I'd seen a photo of the prune colorway in a magazine and absolutely had to have it. It's possible the SA asked if I was interested in Grrrrr! - memory does not serve me well here - but if that happened how awful that I'd said no. And it was still a year before Aaaaargh! appeared in boutiques. By the time I learned there was a FREAKING DINOSAUR SCARF the T rex was three years out of season. Gah.
Thank heavens for the resale market! My first dino appeared shortly after I started the hunt (sometimes the Scarf Gods smile upon you) and came to me from jolly old England. The grey/red continues to be my favorite - that bordeaux goes with everything! The second - the blue T rex with the green eye - came from France courtesy of a traveling friend (she's a personal shopper by trade; I'm happy to share her information if you want to shoot me a note).
And then the Scarf Gods broke into a wide grin. During the pandemic, when boutiques were closed and/or limiting the number of guests allowed in, the fine folks running the online boutique must have spent their downtime cleaning the warehouse and discovered a stash of older scarves (Animapolis was another lucky cleaning-the-warehouse posting). At least that's the story I tell myself; I'm not certain how these older designs came about to be posted. Perhaps since the semiannual sales weren't happening, they collected all the merch designated for the sale and posted them online. Who knows. All I know is I got two more colorways: the red/navy and the medium blue.
Here's a personal frustration (because I'm nerdy like that): I know the colorway numbers for the burgundy (03: bordeaux/gris/bleu glace) and the red (05: bordeaux/marine/noir) but I don't know the colorway for the two blues. The medium blue was labeled as colorway 09 (aqua/ciel/bleu moyen) but the image from my order indicate a completely different colorway (a light blue dino with a white background). So if anyone can put me out of my misery and help solve this riddle shoot me a note! LOL and if you or anyone you know has the white background and wants to re-home it, lemme know!
(There's one more colorway out there: a green dinosaur with an orange background (colorway 04). Much as I'd love to have a complete collection this is not quite an orange I'd wear.)
Hermes doesn't seem to do a Story Behind for men's scarves; this is the snippet they posted on the online shop:
The T-Rex has fascinated humanity ever since its first fossils were discovered. It has dominated pop culture, been featured in books, museums, movies, cartoons... And now on an Hermes scarf
